With the advent of spring,
I look to the sky and cock my head slightly sideways
Looking and listening for the return of old friends;
the bald eagle
the white pelican.
Did you winter well,
Was your journey safe and uneventful,
With the arrival of each species making its way to the north lands
My excitement grows stronger.
Though we are still several feet under banks of snow and long johns have not yet been put away
The annual migration of birds to the north signals that the end to winter is in sight.
Once I’ve laid eyes on a black bear with cubs fresh from a long winter den’s slumber
I will feel confident that we are headed well on our way towards summer.
